  1. So that there is a balance of power, like in employee, employer and labor unions. The difference is businesses don't desire a balance. They want everything lopsided in their favor.

  2. Check and balances. Safe guards against on branch becoming too powerful and ruling the others. Now, go read your history and learn more about the country and system of government that keeps you safe and whom gives you your rights and freedoms. We have a representative democracy that, if elected, Obama wants to turn into a socialist system. Vote McCain in November, if you're old enough that is.

  3. So that they would all have equal power. This way, nobody has absolute power, and they can keep each other in check. Congress can't pass laws without it passing through the president, and the president can't pass laws without it passing through Congress. Same with Judicial except they enforce laws. Hope it helped

  4. There had never been a democratic system designed from scratch all at once.  Our founding fathers were worried that our system might be taken over by a particularly strong president or congressional leaders.  So they set up the govt. in three branches that were meant to be co-equal, and gave all the branches 'checks and balances' against each other.  Congress can't pass a law without the president's signature, unless they have a supermajority, an even then laws are subject to being found unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.  The president is subject to oversight by Congress.  The Supreme Court justices are appointed for life so they don't have to worry about re-election, but they must be nominated by the president and approved by the Senate.

It's a pretty good system when it works.  We have problems when a 'strong' president manages to cow Congress into going along with everything he does, legal or not.  Or when one party controls all three branches and puts partisan concerns above country.
