  1. Depends on the colony.  Puritanism was rigidly enforced in Massachusetts.  The Church of England was the only legal religion in Virginia.  Pennsylvania and Maryland -- founded by Quakers and Catholics respectively, both persecuted in Britain -- exercised religious toleration.
