What were these lights?

Question

Ok, so im out camping with my brother and grandpa in missouri on the jack's fork river. We set up in a gorge and went to sleep before the sun set. Just as the sun was setting though, i noticed that there were lights flying around. I just thought that they were lightning bugs and ignored it. Around 2 in the morning, all of us woke up when a bright light came above our tent. It was a lot like a lightning bug except it was white light, not the greenish yellow of a lightning bug. I looked up and saw thousands of these. They flashed just like lightning bugs, but they were white light much brighter than ordinary bugs.

Does anyone know what theses were? We arent from the area and have no idea what they could have been. We have been telling people it was aliens and would like to have a better answer.

It could have been a very nice sky filled with stars and some sort of atmospheric turbulence that made them seem like they were blinking.

I think they were a type of lighting bug that was a little bigger then the ones you are used to seeing. sorry for the simple answer, but sometimes simple is true.
