  1. Hmmm I never took driving lessons per say. My dad taught me how to drive his Toyota truck when I was 7. I taught my little sister to drive my Jeep when she was 3.

I would change instructors. It should not take that long to learn how to drive.

  2. I can't remember exactly what I was doing by the time I'd had 17 lessons, but I'd probably just started doing reversing exercises, dual carriageways, big roundabouts and things like that. I had one hour lessons. How many lessons it takes to reach a certain level depends on both you and your instructor. I've been learning for a year (just) and failed my second test yesterday. If you're happy with your instructor then stay with them. Apparently, on average, it takes about 45 hours private tuition and about 24 hours private practice to pass the uk driving test (some people take much more, some much much less, this is on average). The thing is though, even when you can driver perfectly on your lessons or when practising, on your test it is loads different. Nerves play a big part, even if your not the nervous type. There's also a certain amount of luck involved. If you're happy with your instructor then stay with them and just keep going. It takes time to learn to drive safely, and it's not some thing you want to rush, even though you want to be able to do it in the shortest amount of time. And most importantly, if you do fail the test when the time comes, DON'T GIVE UP! I've failed two now, and it is very disheartening. Just keep going until you pass. you'll get there in the end. I know I will.

  3. i only done 5 lessons i done reversing on the 3rd lesson and i dont know anyone who done more than 12 lessons

only change the instructor if you feel he/she is holding you back .

I'm guessing also that your not Irish because up until yesterday ppl in Ireland where allowed to drive unaccompanied with their learning permit something which goes a long way towards explaining the amount of road deaths in this country, all the same i dont see why your instructors over were you and a few people that have previously answered have to wait so long before your allowed

    to reverse a car.

in Ireland after your fifth lesson your instructor would give out to you for going to slow, bad manouvering etc etc..

at least when i was learning they did!

  4. It really annoys me how everyone on Yahoo Answers passed their test after a matter of minutes behind the wheel - this probably explains why there are so many sh*t motorists on the roads if they have all took such a short time in passing their tests!

Please don't instantly consider changing instructors. Perhaps, and just perhaps, you might not be as quick at learning to drive as all your friends! Perhaps, your instructor is trying to teach you to DRIVE as opposed to teaching you to PASS YOUR TEST. After all, if people are taught to pass their test, what are they going to do as soon as they've passed - what reason do they have for driving the way they have been "if you  don't drive like this you won't pass" well as soon as you have passed you're gonna stop driving that way!!!

Your instructor is probably trying to get you competant at your exisiting skills before introducing you to new ones. He is probably teaching you the reasons why, and dangers of not doing all the things you learn, as opposed to just telling you to do it! This all takes time! And it takes some people longer than others.

Yeah ok there are some c**p instructors out there, but then again there are some c**p drivers too!! I remember when I was at school I was really c**p at the academic subjects but great at technology. Therefore I had to work twice as hard for my exams as my friends - Thats Life!! I didn't blame my school for me being c**p at science!

Stick with it, and when you're ready, you'll be ready, and you'll probably be a far safer driver than anyone who passed first time after 10 lessons!!

  5. Just try another instructor, just say its a one off and see how it goes.  I was with my teacher for a whole year and he kept saying I wasn't ready, but I went with another guy and took (and passed) the test within six weeks.

  6. I passed after 18 lessons, but depends on how natural you pick it up. I wonder how on earth some people pass the test coz as you will find out, their are some cr4p drivers around. If you feel ready, book your test. I think you should definitely consider changing instructors if your current one is taking you for a ride.

  7. i feel you have answered this question yourself if your not happy with the school then change, go with a company that is recommened from friends/family my sister is with a driving instrutor right now been doing them for 6mths no sign of a test yet depends on yourself but if you feel this company is not making your money worthwhile then change.
