What were your first thoughts when the Manson murders occured?

At the time, I was 10.  When the murders happened, I was traveleing in the area with my family, and we were staying in a motel within 1 mile of the site, 10500 Cielo Dr.

We were really scared, because we were so close!

I remember seeing the Manson family and thinking they acted like  zombies.  The murders were brutal and quite a shock for everyone.  I read the book Helter Skelter and it was excellent.  I was a teenager but not near CA.  Manson has carved a swastika on his forehead while in prison.  he should never be released under any circumstance!
