  1. Yes, there are special wetsuits for triathlons.  Don't use one made for kayaking--the neck opens up like a drag chute when you swim.  A surfing/waterskiing wetsuit would suffice, but they're not designed for swimming so your arm motion would be somewhat constricted.

If this is your first triathlon, you might consider renting one.  Check with the race organizers and sponsors; sometimes they offer wetsuit rental.

You might also pick up a used one. Check your local Craigslist, or look online.

Here are some brands to consider:

    Quintana Roo

    Blue Seventy

    2XU

    Bodyglove

    Aquaman

    Good luck!

  2. I can blather on for a long time, but you will get the information you need faster by speaking to a live person. Can you find a running shop near by you? A specialty shop (not d**k's or Sports Authority) can help you find what you need, and the staff is likely to know what is most appropriate for your particular race (they might not think you need one at all). Wetsuit fit is important, so having someone there to help you is essential. If you are new to triathlons, you might consider renting a wetsuit. Many running shops will rent.

I rented a sleeveless wetsuit from Fleet Feet for a race in the fall, then bought one with sleeves the next spring after I had a better understanding of what I wanted (and was convinced I would do more races). I'm glad I didn't rush into that purchase.
