What will England have to do to remain in the World Cup

England aren’t out of the World Cup just yet but yesterday’s uninspiring performance against Algeria has questioned the minds of many to whether or not the Three Lions can progress to the final 16. What will Fabio Capello’s men have to do to keep the nations hopes alive?

Capello’s men will ultimately have to produce a victory over Group C leaders Slovenia when they travel to Port Elizabeth on June 23rd if they wish to remain in the competition.

USA will also be facing Algeria at the same time from Pretoria, if both USA and England win their next games then both teams are through but goal difference will determine which team wins the group.

However, if both USA and England draw, then this will see Slovenia win the group and goal difference deciding whether England or USA qualify.

USA are currently ahead of England by plus two in goal difference.

Another interesting and possible outcome may bring FIFA’s tie-break rules into effect if England finish drawing 2-2 with Slovenia and the USA 0-0 against Algeria.

Any fan would assume that a victory may seem a simple task, but many had assumed England to come out triumphant against Algeria, but instead the way they played was embarrassing.

The only positive performance was produced by goalkeeper David James.

Italian tactician Capello needs to realise that when something isn’t working, it needs to be changed. It will be interesting to see the team he selects for next week, let’s hope it works.
