I'm 16 and I'm taking my first behind-the-wheel test in 2 days. Yes, I've been practicing with my parents. But exactly what will I get tested on? Would I go on the freeway? And will I be required to park by backing up into a space, or just by driving straight into the parking spot. oh and I live in California, if that makes a difference. Please list everything I'll need to know, besides the basic knowledge (signals, stop signs, etc.) I NEED to pass this test. kthanks.

  1. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/fas...

  2. parallel parking, 3 point turns. Make sure to STOP at the stop signs.

  3. On the road, your examiner will be looking to see whether you:

    • Check traffic, including pedestrians, by your head and eye movements as well as using your mirrors.

    • Signal before you pull into or out of traffic, make a turn, or change lanes.

    • Drive at an appropriate and legal speed: not too fast and not too slow.

    • Leave adequate space between your vehicle and other vehicles.

    • Maintain good control of your vehicle.

    • Obey all traffic laws.

During your driving test, your examiner will ask you to perform certain critical skill test maneuvers that include:

    • Backing your vehicle.

    • Driving through intersections (controlled, uncontrolled, and stop signs).

    • Completing left and right hand turns.

    • Completing left and right lane changes.

    • Driving in residential and business areas.

If you make a critical driving error (CDE), you will be given an unsatisfactory test score (failure). A CDE is a dangerous or potentially dangerous driving maneuver. Examples of critical driving errors include:

    • Driving at least 10 mph over or under the speed limit.

    • Failing to look over your shoulder when pulling into traffic or changing lanes.

    • Running a red light.

    • Failing to use windshield wipers when necessary because of rain.

    */End of Line.

  4. It's been years but I do highly recommend that before you're test you ask your parents to allow you to drive everywhere and anywhere, without considering the price of gas. The more comfortable you are behind the wheel, everything will feel more natural. I do remember having to pull into a spot - nose first/parallel (note your distance from the curb); backing up in a straight line; left turns and right; no freeway. Typically the DMV person will make you drive around the vicinity of the DMV location. Meaning right turn, right turn, left turn, right turn, return. Depending on where you're taking the test. I took my test in Lincoln Park, Los Angeles.
