Question:

What will I need to travel from the USA to Mexico if I'm a permanent resident?

I'm a permanent resident of the USA and a Mexican citizen by birth. I have always been able to cross the border by land by just presenting my permanent resident card and TX DL as enough documentation. However, I'm aware that as of 01/31/08 US citizens will need a passport. Does this law affect me in any way?

  1. No...passports will NOT be required for LAND travel to and from Mexico after Jan 31...the date has been moved back and no exact date has been set...but it will be later than next summer.  However, as a legal resident in the U.S. and a Mexican citizen, you are required to keep a current Mexican passport at all times.  This is part of the conditions of having a green card.  If you no longer have a Mexican passport, you need to go to the nearest Mexican consulate and get one.  You will need it to cross the border in a few months.  You can see the site below for current passport requirements and check it every once in a while to see when the date is set.
