  4. In England his name will always be synonymous with the "Hand of God". Every else he will be remembered as one of greatest players ever.

  5. using his hand to score the goal that won Argentina the World Cup, also known as the "Hand of God"...

  6. 1986 World Cup

Maradona captained the Argentine national team to victory in the 1986 FIFA World Cup, winning the final in Mexico against West Germany. Throughout the 1986 World Cup, Maradona asserted his dominance and was the most dynamic player of the tournament. He played every minute of every Argentina game, scored 5 goals and made 5 assists. However, it was the two goals he scored in a 2—1 quarter-final win against England which cemented his legend.

This particular match was played in the background of the Falklands war between those 2 very countries and emotions still were lingering in the air throughout the entire match. Replays showed that the first goal was scored by striking the ball with his hand. Maradona was coyly evasive, describing it as "a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God." The play became known as the "Hand of God," or "la mano de Dios." Ultimately, on 22 August 2005 Maradona acknowledged on his television show that he hit the ball with his hand purposely, and that he immediately knew the goal was illegitimate. However, the goal stood, much to the wrath of the England players. Maradona's second goal was to be later voted by FIFA as the greatest goal in the history of the World Cup. He picked up the ball in his own half and with 11 touches swiveled around and ran more than half the length of the field, dribbling past five English players: (Glenn Hoddle, Peter Reid, Kenny Sansom, Terry Butcher, and Terry Fenwick) and goalkeeper Peter Shilton. This goal was voted the Goal of the Century in a 2002 online poll conducted by FIFA.

Maradona followed this with two more goals in the semifinal against Belgium, including another virtuoso dribbling display for the second goal. In the final, the opposing West German side attempted to contain him by double-marking, but he nevertheless found the space to give the final service to Jorge Burruchaga for the winning goal. Argentina beat West Germany 3-2 in front of 115,000 spectators at the Azteca stadium and Maradona lifted the World Cup trophy as the greatest player in the world after dominating the tournament in a way no other player had ever done before in the history of the World Cup.

In a tribute to him, the Azteca stadium authorities built a statue of him scoring the "goal of the century" and placed it at the entrance of the stadium.

The Mexico 86 World Cup truely belongs to one person only. Maradona.

  7. a bit of both i think will be remmebered about maradona.

  8. HAND OF GOD - 1986!!

    Absolutely Brilliant!

  9. The "Hand of God" incident

  10. He'll be remembered for scoring the greatest goal in history, and for being the greatest footballer in history.

Napoli have only ever won Serie A twice - both times with Maradona.  Pele never did that.

  11. he will be remembered for shovelling tonnes of cocaine up his big fat nostrils.

  12. Skinning the English defense in 1986.

  13. The "Hand of God" incident.Ironically in the same match he also scored what many people call the best goal in history.

He would be remembered best as a football genius. If you don't know who Maradona is,chances are you don't know about his off-pitch problems.

  14. for being a magician

  15. personally I will remember him as the greatest footballer of my time .

No one comes near to him today and it may be a long time before we see that kind of talent again.

The 'hand of god' incident was sad but have you ever seen a footballer correct the referee when given a advantageous decision?

Im sure any player on the planet would have taken the goal especially such an important one. he went on to run circles around us in the same game anyways.

  16. He will be most remembered for violating the English defense a la Ottoman.  The funny thing is most limeys reacted the same way Lawrence did.

  17. The infamous Hand Of God during world cup 86

  18. Fooling the English in the world cup1986, as soon as he picks the ball up and skins the first guy you knew he was going the whole way...amazing

  19. Maradona is without a doubt one of the greatest player the world has known. He'll be remember for the way he used to play, those insane skills that could break down an entire defense in an instant.

The famous had of god at the 86 world cup

and the best goal ever he scored against England at the same W.C :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rW-lK9F6...

  20. All of the above, but the drug taking and cheating are secondary here. All geniuses have got their bad sides, just look at Michael Jackson and George Michael.

    Among Maradona's achievements:

-Dribbling past six players to score against England. Winning the same game all by himself, before saying later that for him, it was a means of avenging his country for what happened in the Falklands war of 1982. Of course, people who come from former colonial powers (that is, most of Europe) and from imperialist nations (you'll surely understand who I mean) won't understand that, but for others who, like me, were former British colonies and suffered at their hands, Maradona is a hero, in defeating England, he won a battle for us.

-Being such a rare combination of pace, power, technique and intelligence that Argentina has been unable to replace him. Of course you could claim that Messi is his heir but compared to Maradona, he is physically frail and has got a very weak shot. Moreover, as long as he plays as a right winger and not as a number 10, he'll never replace Maradona.

-Making Napoli a successful club side able to compete with the Nothern powers. The club never fully recovered from his departure.

-Standing up against the imperialism of certain nations after he ended his footballing career.

For third-world countries, Maradona is nothing less than a hero. Of course, people from richer nations, always so eager to teach lessons of morality (but have they got any?) will rather pay attention to his drug use and say things like "Well, Platini wasn't as gifted but was exemplary in his conduct."

    BUT WE LOVE MARADONA

I'll end with a statement from Diego the Great himself: "What a player I could have been without the drugs!"

  21. Being great at both football and volleyball for Argentina!!!

  22. 50:50

A master technician that let himself and his country down.

  23. Mexico 86!!!!

  24. being part of a barcelona side that got thumped at OLD TRAFFORD.

  25. he did 2 bad things and one good thing

the bad things outnumber the good things and also the good things belong to the past so i think he is best remembered for his drug taking and cheating which is more recent

  26. Taking an average Argentina side to World Cup glory. taking a poor Argentina side to a second World Cup Final. Taking a small unfashionable Italian team to 2 SerieA titles & a Uefa Cup.

On the negative side, "hand of God", the image of him running to camera after his goal against Greece before his failed drug test, and the shocking challenge vs a Brazilian in the '82 World Cup.

  27. a little bit of both

    he has his good times.

    and his bad times..

cant blame the guy; hes a legend..

  28. Snorting coke I think.

It's a shame cos from what I've heard he seemed like a decent enough guy. It seems like all his groupies/mates created a lot more trouble than he ever did and because he was so loyal to them he couldn't turn them away.

  29. as a fat coke head, a liar and a cheater! good player, but too many off the field issues. I think he's overrated. Zidane was 10 better than he ever was

  30. Bit of both i expect, which is a shame, but the first thing that comes into my mind, is "The hand of God".

  31. maradona IS maradona....i think maradona and i think SOCCER....who cares about the drug and cheating?? i mean its not like you actually know him or have any emotional attachment or anything to him....so all i have to say is that who cares about a star's personal life as long as he satisfies your taste in whatever it is he does?
