Over the years that I've followed the royals,I have always read that Charles wants to honor his grandfather and great-grandfather by becoming King George VII. Charles was particularly impressed with the way his grandfather,George VI,led the UK during World War II,how he, and the much-loved Queen Mother,Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon,kept the UK together during the abdication crisis.Charles' great-grandfather,George VI, had to deal with World War I.

And to some of the responders;please don't equate being American with not knowing about how other cultures and govenrments work! I am American and have managed to learn a great deal about the British Royal Family--I read!

In truth I don't think it will necessarily be Charles III.

Many people think he will be George VII and it could well turn out to be so.

However the name isn't going to make----or-----break him and his reputation is it?

Charles can choose to rule as King Charles III or take another name. Kings often take a different regnal (ruling) name from their first given name. Charles' grandfather George VI was Prince Albert ("Bertie") before he became king, and his great great grandfather Edward VII was also Prince Albert. It is thought possible that Prince Charles may choose to become King George VII after his grandfather.

In addition to the above, HRH Prince Charles has made it clear that when he is King, he wishes to bear the title, "Defender of the Faiths" - that is plural as opposed to the present style of "Defender of the Faith" as in the CofE.
