  1. little confused, are you going to a class on how to coach chess or a chess coach for lessons..

If the latter, which is the vibe I am getting, you will be really surprised how little you really know about the game.  As for how fast and far you advance is really in your own hands.  If you really want it, I knew one guy who went from beginner to a 1800 in just one year, this is rare mind you but possible.  I played for 3 years and was around a 1500 at my best.

Just for a point of reference, your average person who can move the pieces, I would probably say around a 500-800.

  2. Instruction and feedback from a chess coach will be of most value

when you get to a greater playing strength.

To make best use of your scheduled chess lessons from a coach,

I recommend that you get going on your own. Now.

As a beginner, with or without your coach:

    1. Learn the rules and strategy.

    2. Play chess against opponents of about your own playing strength.

    3. Study actual games played: by you; by Grandmasters; etc.

    4. Enjoy spending a lifetime improving your skill.

I provided useful websites in the Sources section of my reply.

    Read about:

The Pieces and How They Move

    • The Rook

    • The Bishop

    • The Knight

    • The Pawn

    • The Queen

    • The King

    • Special Moves: Castling, Promotion, and En Passant.

    • Winning

    Piece Values

    Tactics

    • Pins

    • Skewer

    • Discovered Attack

    • Forks

    • Sacrifices

    • The Power of Check

    Quotes. For example:

    • A computer beat me in chess, but it was no match when it came to kickboxing.

    • When you see a good move, look for a better one!

    • The Pin is mightier than the sword :-)

    • It is always better to sacrifice your opponent's men.

  3. I am an expert at chess (I'm not trying to brag, Im trying to tell you from an experts perspective). when i was young, i played alot with my dad, who used to always beat me, he was very good too. once i kept playing i realised i was never going to beat him, but when i played everyone else, i noticed i was beating everyone, eventualy i kept playing and started beating my dad, now he struggles to beat me.

The main things to keep in mind are:

    - look before you leap, see if where your moving a piece leaves another piece vulnerable, or if where your moving the pieces put it in dangers

    - plan ahead, try to think, " if i move my rook here, then he takes that, and then i take that ect", think a couple of turns ahead.

    - know your pieces, you need to know what is worth loosing what isnt, so i'll tell you here.

    pawns are worth 1 point

knights and bishops are worth 3

    rooks (castles) are worth 5

    queens are worth 9

kings are worth 999,999,999,999,999, and so on, basicaly there infinite, you cant loose them.

even though that hasnt answered your question yet, ill answer it now.

In primary school, we had an expert come in and teach us how to play chess every friday. he tought us what pieces were worth what, the two special moves (Castling and En Passant) and some other things.

  4. I purchased a computerized chess game and learned that way.  I think it is less expensive and you can play anytime you want.  There are several levels playing against the computer.  I played a lot in school and was one of the better players during the tournament, but wanted to advance and the computerized chess game really helped.
