  1. you won't see anything of either eclipse (and your dates are wrong).

meteor showers are best viewed from anywhere that is dark. if you can't see the milky way, your view will be degraded.

  2. Hi SF!

You won't be able to see either the August 1 solar eclipse or the August 16th partial eclipse of the moon from California.  The solar eclipse happens mostly over Asia, around 3 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time, while the lunar eclipse two weeks later occurs in early afternoon, Pacific Time, before the moon comes up.

The next eclipse you can see in CA will be a partial eclipse of the moon in the wee hours of June 26, 2010, with the partial eclipse starting at 3:16 Pacific Time that morning.  The next total lunar eclipse for you is not until late evening of December 20, 2010.

Northern California next sees an eclipse of the sun on the late afternoon of May 20, 2012.  It's a deep partial eclipse in San Francisco, but if you went up to far northern California, you'll be in the path of an annular eclipse, where the moon moves completely across the sun's face, but is slightly too small to completely cover it.

There's a total eclipse of the sun August 21, 2017 over Oregon that you absolutely must drive up to see, because the next total solar eclipse visible over the Bay area is not until December 31, 2252.

  3. None of the eclipses will be visible there.  There will be a total solar eclipse on August 1, but only seen over parts of Russia and China.  The partial lunar eclipse on August 16 will be seen primarily over Europe and Africa, as well as a piece of it seen over South America.

The Perseid meteor showers peaks on August 12, but they will occur (less in number) some days either side of that date.  Best way to view is to get away from city lights and look in a general northeasterly direction.  Better viewing times are after midnight, when the rotation of the Earth carries you into a better position.

  4. That kind of depends on the air quality.  There's still quite a bit of haze over Fairfield, the bay area is supposed to be clear now, but if there's another fire...  Otherwise check with the weatherchannel.com

  5. A sillouete of Micheal Jackson doing the moon walk.
