  1. I think it signals the disintegration of the whole union, quite frankly. This isn't some random, piddly issue: carry-on sacks represent the way an entire body of people commute and commune. I just hope and pray that the powers to be get together and hammer out a compromise. It would be a shame to go through all that effort creating and supporting the euro as a common currency only to have it all come undone at the air terminal.

  2. Obviously, this is just the beginning.  If the EU can't agree on carry-on luggage, how can we expect them to agree on a common shoe size for all EU citizens?  And you have to admit, people buy more shoes than carry-on bags-- a common shoe size would be an economic boon for European markets.

It's the beginning of the end.

  3. National pride can undo anything. There are more than two dozen nations involved in the project called EU. With every nation mortgaging a bit of her sovereignty, EU was hobbled up because Economics upstaged Politics. Sovereignty like a woman's chastity cannot be traded in bits and pieces. Either one has it wholly or doesn't. It is surprising that it is going on smoothly till date. Also it keeps the quarrels at domestic level that would otherwise become international issues.

The leaders, who are the metropolitan countries of erstwhile global empires (except Germany that did not have an empire)

has to contend with certain harsh realities. How to cope with the giant next door, Russia. How to stall an incompatible culture (Turkey) from gate-crashing. What is going to be the contours of the new order of international 'money'. How to build dykes around Europe so that energy sapping , festering wounds like 'Darfur', negation of state called 'Somalia' and so on. Though France is flexing her muscle whenever there is a 'twitching' in her erstwhile empire, how to prevent it from entering the portals of EU. How to deal with 'I' countries - Israel, Iran, Iraq and India even, wallowing in self-importance, on long term-basis. What strategies to adapt to ensure collective energy security. EU will be busy with these things for the next 50years.
