What will cause my right eye to see flashes of light and then feel discomfort afterwards?

I have experienced seeing flashes of light in my right eye for the first time three days ago. It was night and I was ready to go to bed so I turned off the light and my room became dark. When I lay down on my bed, my eyes were opened and I started seeing flashes of light in my right eye. Even when I closed my right eye I could still see the flashes. After letting it go on for 10-15 seconds, I got scared so I opened the light and closed my eyes and covered them with my hands for a couple of minutes and the flashes went away. I think the flashes would have gone on for longer if I didn't covered them with my hands (because of this I don't know if it's an eye migraine which lasts longer). I don't remember if the flashes look like circles or lightning bolts. But afterwards I tried to go back to sleep and my right eye started have a feeling of discomfort and it still does feel abnormal compared to my left eye. Sometimes when I try to open my right eye wide it hurts a tiny bit. Also, now there is this slight feeling of heaviness or something weighing down on the top part of right eye or/and upper right eyelid.

I want to know what is most likely to be causing this?

  1. You should go to the doctor. It could be something simple, like you were just tired, or it could be something going on with your CNS.

  2. When I was younger when I had these types of flashes they were usually followed by an extremely severe migrane.

...there have however been times when there was some flashes but very mild and were there when I closed my eyes...but a severe migrane did not occur maybe a very very mild headache.

what I began doing is when the flashes come I would drink a can of coke. For some reason Cola (not pepsi or other drinks) but Coke would reduce the pain fairly well. I dont n=know why really maybe its the type of caffine in Coke.
