What will clean sticky gunk off closet shelving? ?

We just bought a house and the closet shelving is really old. It is just caked with years of dirt and dust and has a "sticky" feel to it. I tried hot soap and water but they still feel sticky....Any ideas without having to replace them all???? THanks!

Windex vinegar muti-surface cleaner.You can use Mechanics hand cleaner and it comes in an orange scent. Get that at a automotive store.It is a good clearner for grease try a section to see if it is safe to use on your surface.. If Contact paper was use on the shelves and there is adhesive residue use Goof Off. It has mineral spirits in it so you MUST use proper ventilation. You can get Goof Off at hardware stores.Elbow grease applys to all the above.

remove all things in the closet then scrub the closet then return the things.

The best thing to use is WD40. Try a little bit on a cloth first on a bit that doesnt show the just spray away and rub off - like magic!

Use whatever spray cleaner you have and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.  I've gotten rid of lots of sticky gooey messes with them.

Try a product called Goof Off.  It's good at getting sticky stuff off of things without ruining paint.  I don't know what your shelf is made of but you could also try CLR.
