What will go further if struck perfectly, with a perfect lie, in perfect situations?

My 3 iron hybrid with 17 degrees or my 5 wood of 20.5. My five wood is longer and has a bigger head but my hybrid has less loft.

Also note that i can hit both straight etc.

  1. The 5 wood will fly further.  Woods are designed for a ball flight that will not be as high, but a little more penetrating with less spin for more carry and roll.  Also, there is more mass in the head of the 5 wood, which will promote a longer ball flight.  The hybrid is designed for more of a long iron type ball flight, with a little more spin.  The ball will fly higher and land softer than a wood, even though the wood has a bit more loft.

  2. The laws of physics and the gods of golf do not allow for a ball to be struck perfectly from a perfect lie in perfect situations.

  3. Each person will have a different answer to that. I personally prefer long irons to hybrids because I can control the trajectory and distance better but I'm probably an exception.  Spend 5 minutes on the range and answer that one yourself.

  4. YOUR 5 WOOD WILL FOR THE SIMPLE REASON OF THE LOFT. IT WILL STAY IN THE AIR LONGER AND NOT TWIST AT THE BOTTOM LIKE YOUR HYBRID MIGHT. TRY PLAYING YOUR BALL A LITTLE FURTHER BACK IN YOUR STANCE AND SWING OUT TO IN AND CREATE A DRAW FOR MORE DISTANCE.

  5. 5 wood in any situation

  6. It would be very close and it would depend on the actuall difference in club head speed between the two.  There isn't to much diference in shaft length in those two clubs.  There is a lot of factors, but in the end it would enough in distance that you should worry more about comfort.

  7. the 5 wood should

  8. The 5 wood should go farther. It should go roughly the same distance as a 2 iron or hybrid equavalent.

  9. The 5 wood should go longer.

  10. d**n...am I the only one who thinks the hybrid will hit it farther, or at the very least, the same length? I don't see how the 5 wood with 3.5 degrees more loft will hit it further... Even the example given by the dude who hits his 7-wood 15 yards longer than his comparable hybrid.......In this situation, we're talking about over 3 and a half degrees here; that's a one club difference! And I'd be willing to gamble that the 5-wood is at least 3-5 years old, if not older, while the hybrid is a year old, two at the most. Technology counts for something....

If nothing else, the two clubs (if both struck perfectly) will hit the ball roughly the same length, as the stronger loft of the hybrid will balance out with the (I'm guessing) 1-1.5 inch longer shaft and head size.

I don't see how the 5-wood would automatically be the unanimous winner...

  11. The loft on that 5 wood is closer to a normal 7 wood so these should travel very close to the same distance.  My 5 wood (17 degree) goes 15 yards further than my hybrid  (18 degrees)  However trial and error is the only sure way to determine this for you and your swing.

  12. I would say a five wood with the longer shaft. The shaft promotes a higher clubhead speed and a more true flight. The hybrid has a lower MOI and an off center shot will be more forgiving as it will have less side spin on a hybrid. But the good shot will go farther with a five wood every time
