The Mayan calender runs out of days.  Its based on a 30 day lunar month, with a 360 day year.  It has a particular starting date like the Gregorian and Julian calendars.  Because of it's simplified math it has an endpoint solar calendars lack. Just a math thing, nothing mystical.

First it will be dark.... and then it will get light.... and then it will get dark again. Some people will make a big deal out of it, and most of us will try to get some Christmas shopping done. I will be retired and plan to spend the day reading a book, working on some jewelry, and making life for my family and friends just a little bit better than it was the day before.

Hillary will be running for President, again.

The date will be 12/12/12 and a bunch of people will pick it as their wedding day.

Meanwhile some whacked out members of the 'dregs of society' will have some sort of black mass and then midnight will come  and it will be 12/13/12.

Also, you will need a jacket.   It will be December afterall and it will be cold.
