What will happen if I'm suicidal and I get checked into a hospital?

I have been openly talking about hurting myself lately, and I think I should check into a hospital. I do have depression and take medication for it. I am only 17, and I live in Ohio, so I don't know what will happen, if I'll get put on a 72 hour watch or something. What usually goes on when you're checked into a hospital for suicidal behavior? I'm kind of scared to check myself in.

  1. Don't do it! Yes, I'm only 12 years old, but I have depression, I'm on medication for it, and I cut myself. It makes me feel better though. Don't check into a hospital because they will just make your life worse. They don't understand anythinq you're going through. Just find a close friend or a counsler you can always talk to. Even me if you want. sexuBbYgurl813@yahoo.com or you can add me on myspace. Ch3rrygurl@earthlink.net

  2. PLEASE grab a parent or other adult friend and go get help RIGHT NOW!!  I don't know any of the ins/outs of being checked into a facility, but I do know that u need professional guidance to see u through this trying time and get u back on track that UR LIFE IS VALUABLE!!

PLEASE GO TO A RESPONSIBLE ADULT NOW!

    Prayers out to you...

  3. yes, at least 72 hours even if you voluntarily sign. not 3 days either, you get released the 4th day if your lucky. they will just monitor you on the critical care unit. nothing bad, just lots of restrictions. for me, we couldnt go outside, be alone, have any personal belongings except for certain clothes, no shoes even, ect. just groups, psychiatrists daily, councelors, etc, to get you back on track

  4. I don't know for sure, but since you are a minor I would think your parents would be making the decisions of what happens.  I had a friend (an adult) who attempted suicide and he was put in a mental hospital/treatment center for a few weeks.  He had group therapy and one on one with a psychiatrist.  They can prescribe meds there.  He was released once he started exhibiting healthy behaviors.

  5. If you take yourself to an emergency room, which most people do they will decide if it's better to keep you there at the hospital or another facility. You will be monitored closely and have a psych evaluation. The DR's will take a close look at your meds and decide if they are working for you and make changes accordingly. Please know that help is always out there and suicide is not the answer. Please see someone ASAP.

    Good luck

  6. If you do feel you need to check in, your parents will have to know. I I don't think that's a bad thing tho. Of course, I don't know your situation but if you want to start feeling better, you will need a support system. I checked into a hospital about 3 months ago because I was feeling suicidal and having thoughts of harming my daughter. For me, it was the first step I needed to take to start working on getting myself back to healthy. Or at least functionable. Some people have commented not to do it but it may be good for you to take that step. I really enjoyed group therapy. It was the first time I could talk openly about my feelings and not wonder if people thought i was crazy....cuz we all were. ;) Really, tho, it was great being able to relate to people. It was a break from everything to concentrate on my health. I needed it. Maybe you do too. E-mail me if you want. I will tell you more about my experience or just talk if you want. Im 24, I have been depressed since I was 10/11. I'm sure we can relate. geek_gurl_makeup@yahoo.com
