Question:

What will happen if I cash a check that I put a stop payment on at a party store?

It will be a day or two before the store actually gets it to their bank. From that point it will be a few days before the bank finds out that there is a stop payment on it. If I take them the real check when I get it will that stop anything from happening to me?

I am in a really tight spot right now. I'm down to my last few bucks because I was expecting this rebate from Sprint to come. When it finally gets here I thought that I had lost it and called and had them reissue me a new one. I turn around and it's sitting right in my back seat. I am so frustrated right now that I want to just take it to the store and deal with any repurcussions. I can give them the real check when it gets here.

What about this: Do you think that if I tell the guy at my neighborhood store that there is a stop payment on it and let him hold it until I get the real check he will do it? It's only $100 and I'm a regular at the store.

  1. That's fraud, sorry.  The store's bank is going to charge them a fee when the check bounces, and the store is going to come after YOU to repay it.

Since you know for a fact that the check in your possession has had a stop payment issued, you would be committing a crime now to attempt to cash it or deposit it.
