What will happen if I run NG thru an LP converted system?

I am running natural gas at my home and I bought a used gas insert fireplace, I cant find anything that shows its been converted to LP but the guy I bought it from I sure is on LP.

  1. Call your gas company. Many items can be changed over by flipping the orfice in the regulator but not all. Some need the burner orfices changed also. If you try to use it with the settings for LP, it will sound like a jet taking off due to the smaller openings in the burner.


  2. Have it converted to Nat gas. Local gas co has service dept.

  3. LP has a much higher heat content than natural gas, so if it is jetted for LP, the orifices will be much too small for natural gas.  If it works at all, the flame will be very small.  You will need to replace the orifices, and the controls.  A plumbing or HVAC supply center should be able to help you with that.

  4. The o*****e is a different size.  Have a plumber or fireplace installer check it out for you.  They would be cheaper than the deductible on your homeowners' insurance if it explodes.  Good luck.
