Question:

What will happen if I stucco my house without a permit?

I have a house I'm planning on getting stucco. The house is out in the country, about 1/2 mile from any other houses, and on a dirt road.

But do you think I'll be getting myself into a lot of trouble by not getting a permit? What problems in the future could it possibly cause?

  1. YOU MIGHT,  ARE YOU DOING IT YOURSELF ?IF A CONTRACTOR DOES IT HE WOULD WANT A PERMIT   IF HE DOESNT ASK FOR IT  JUST DO IT AND IF YOU GET CAUGHT  SAY YOU DIDNT KNOW YOU NEEDED A PERMIT HOPEFULLY YOUR NEIGHBORS ARE COOL

  2. bro....you don't need a permit to do that....its about like painting your house

  3. Isn't stucco just for walls, ceilings...? You don't need building permits for minor repairs. Only for remodeling, electrical changes, plumbing changes, additions, etc.

  4. There are lots of answers to this question.

If you live in a high risk fire zone, then a stucco permit is required because there is a fire safety code that stucco must comply with.  Check with your local building and safety office for info.

If you plan on living in the house until you die, then take the risk of having no permit.

Also, Good luck selling the house if the buyer or real estate company finds out there was no permit pulled on the stucco or any add ons you have done.

Any good contractor will not do the job without permits either. They risk losing their license and can be sued if they don't stucco according to the building codes of the state you live in.

Read these answers carefully.  I love people that answer like: "Dude, stucco is just like painting. You don't need a permit for that".  When they have no clue what they are talking about...

BTW,  I am a General contractor in California and only hire licensed stucco contractors for all my jobs.

  5. Most areas in the US do not require a permit for changing siding or adding stucco, you should be just fine.  Call up your local buolding department to find out for certain.

  6. Unless your house happens to be listed in some Historical registry or in such a district where such things are considered, you don't have a permit issue.

First of all it's more considered a repair/improvement, not a structural modification.

Beyond that, and without knowing where you live, you may be in an unicorporated part of a county, where such things are less bothered with, by the governing agencies.
