First - if I could I would try to work out a deal with them, change the payment schedule or something.

If they repossess, they can sell the car (for any amount they like) and you are responsible for paying off the remainder of the debt. You could still be paying for a car you don't have.

If you can't work it out to change the payment schedule, you might consider selling the car to someone who would be willing to take over the payments for you so it's no longer your responsibility.
