  1. At first you get a wet nail.

    Then the iron oxide coating begins to dissolve in the acidic solution.

    Fe2O3(s) + 6HCl(aq) --> 2FeCl3(aq) + 3H2O(l)

    or

    Fe2O3(s) + 6H+ --> Fe3+ + 3H2O

    Then the iron metal which has become exposed reacts with the hydrogen ion to make iron ions and hydrogen gas

    2Fe + 6HCl(aq) --> 2FeCl3(aq) + 3H2(g)

    or

    2Fe + 6H+ --> 2Fe3+ + 3H2(g)

    The hydrogen gas that is produced should burn when tested with a lighted splint.
