  1. This was actually done several years ago at Yale University. You can put someone on a low Tryphtophan diet (trypthtophan is the precursor to serotonin) and then give them a protein shake, the protein shake will suck all the remain tryphtophan out of the blood and the serotonin levels in the brain drop really low.

    It turns out that nothing happens to normal 'happy' people, serotonin is not required for normal mood (at least in the very short term). You can do the same thing to a person who had depression and then got better on a serotonin boosting medication like Prozac. Now the person does become depressed when you lower the serotonin.

    So the bottom line is that low serotonin does not make normal people depressed, but it is required for depressed people to feel better.
