I have a coleslaw recipe that calls for both celery seed and mustard seed. I can only find ground mustard but I found the celery seed. Will the ground mustard make the salad taste too strong? Should Ikeep looking for mustard seed or just cut in half the amount called for?

  1. ground mustard is simply ground mustard seeds... use half the amount

  2. Yes dry mustard can safely be used as a substitute for mustard seed.

1 teaspoon mustard seeds = 1-1/2 teaspoons dry mustard.

It also depends on what you're making. Mustard seeds are used in pickling, and you cannot use mustard powder and expect the same result.

  3. not much of a difference, maybe a stronger or weaker taste though.

  4. Nothing....they're pretty much interchangeable.

  5. Use a tiny pinch of ground mustard.  Depends on the brand and type but it will be WAY stronger than mustard seed.  You could always omit it entirely...
