Probably nothing unusual. If the failure of countless past apocalyptic predictions is any indication, then I think the best prediction we can make about 21-12-2012 is that all the apocalyptic predictions about it are going to turn out to be false. There is absolutely no known scientific reason why any apocalypse would be significantly more likely to happen on this particular date than any other; ever last prediction about the end of the world is based on nothing more than numerology, astrology and superstition, not science.

Well, I haven't gotten a best answer yet and it would be very helpful so here are some facts that could help you figure out why everybody believes this to be "Doomsday":

1: The first ancient mayan calender ends exactly on this date. Nobody knows why.

2: NASA scientists have been calculating the speeds and directions of Meteors, Asteroids and Comets and they found that an Asteroid the size of Texas is going to strike earth at an estimated speed of 2200 mph. At this speed, even if you are on the opposite side of the earth, could kill you and if not cause a second ice age (this is because a dust cloud over the sky would form and remain for several years).

3: The only other thing I know about is that the winter solstice happens every year on this date (the winter solstice is when the sun is at its lowest point in our sky) and it is said that the sun is supposed to grow to a massive size (10-100 times larger than its current size) and glow bright red, (becoming the 3rd to last stage of an average star's life) and swallow the inner solar system. that means Mercury and Venus will be swallowed. And if Earth isn't swallowed by the sun then it will become an extremely hot and baron desert planet which will no longer support life.

Nothing special, and I have bet $11,000 on that, so you can believe me. No one really knows when any Mayan calendar cycles begin or end, since there are so many of them, and the Mayans disappeared centuries ago and cannot explain it to us. The date 12/21/12 is just based upon a wild guess, so it cannot really be so specific. It amazes me that so many people on here blindly repeat that date without bothering to do any research on the actual Mayan calendar, as opposed to what some anonymous charaltan invented about it. I asked a question on here about who started this "kuso" (Japanese for "c**p"), and no one knew. All I got as answers was the same tired kuso I have heard dozens of times that is quite ignorant. It is really sad that no one even knows who started this "ngao si" (Chinese for "bull c**p") but blindly repeats it as if it was true. No one on YA has bet with me. It is 11 intoxicated men at bars who did bet $1000 apiece. Some of them have placed $1000 bets on football games with me too. Matt wins the prize for ignorance here. He even says something absurd about NASA in his answer.

Listen, the world will not end in 2012. I'm 99.9% positive. Unless, the sun magically explodes, we will live at least a few more good centuries to come.

The main idea behind 2012 is the end of the Mayan calendar on 12/21/2012. Blah, blah, blah. There was no way they could predict world bye-bye, considering their calendars couldn't see more than 500 years into the future. Yeah, okay, Mayans. Did you ever think maybe they just got sick of making calendars and figured, "Heck, we won't be around then. Why continue?"

Second reason, is that this mysterious planet called Nibiru, also known as Jupiter, will smash into the Earth killing all humans. Total BS. NIBIRU IS NOT REAL. IT'S JUPITER PEOPLE. No need to panic. And if it was coming in 2012, we could see it through amateur telescopes in our backyards. Anyone who wants to prove me wrong on that? Send me the pictures via email. I dare you.

Third reason, the most stupid, is the Earth and Sun experiencing magnetic pole reversal. All this does is flip our compasses. North is south, south is north,(This has actually been known to occur several times.) and our seasons will be flip-flopped, then our electronics won't work. Uh oh. We can live like pioneers for a while. We have books and Janga.(: There is also no evidence these flips have lasting damage.

The earth is also losing its magnetic field that shields us from sun rays and other nasties.. about 1% every decade. So, it'll stick around long enough to protect us and a few more generations at least.  

I'm not gonna lie. I was freaked when I heard of Doomsday 2012, but think about 2000 and 2003, previous doomsday deadlines. We're still here guys. Yeah, the world will end, eventually, but not anytime soon. I assure you. At least not in the near centuries to come.

Well, I don't really care because if we die, we die! If there is no way of changing it then might as well accept it as destiny.

We can do preventive measures such as recycling and preserving our valuable resources, but idk if that'll help.

I believe that we should just wait and see and not so absorbed in 'oh we are dying today' things. If we are going to go to kingdom come, then might as well live life to the fullest!

The winter solstice will occur.  All the other claims you have heard are false.  there is no actual scientific theory or evidence that anything unusual is going to happen in 2012. It is a collection of myths and disproven theories being promulgated by doomsday predictors, who predict a new one every few years. The longer explanation is below:

It is based on the end the current cycle of the Mayan long count calendar. No doomsday was predicted and the Mayan civilization died out.

Niburu (Planet X) doesn't exist. Zecharia Sitchin is an author of books promoting the ancient astronaut theory for human origins. He attributes the creation of the ancient Sumerian culture to the Annunaki (or Nephilim) from a hypothetical planet named Nibiru in the solar system. The Doomsayers predicted that it was to hit Earth in 2003. When it didn't show up, they just moved it out to 2012 to coincide with the end of the Mayan calendar.

Galactic Alignment - takes 36 years to precess through galactic equator, we will be 6 degrees off in 2012.

Asteroid Apophis - the 2001 alert was for 2029, and was canceled after additional observations showed it would not hit us.

Polar Shift - the magnetic poles are moving all the time. Polar reversal happens over thousands of years.

Passage through a "photon belt" has been added. This is also untrue and wouldn't hurt us if it were. Photons are merely units of light.

The Mayan calendar does not end on that date, nor on any other date.

Unless you claim that our calendar ends on December 31, every year.

It is the end of a long count (on the 20th) and the start of a new one on the 21st.

The Mayans did NOT predict anything special for that date (except, perhaps, bigger New Year celebrations for that date -- the winter solstice was the official day of New Year in the common Mayan calendar.

Mayan astronomers (who did use the long count calendar) left descriptions of events for later than the year we call 2012.  They date the events using their long count calendar.  Obviously they expected neither the calendar nor the world to end.

Nibiru is already know to be a fictitious planet born of a weak translation of old Sumerian texts.  The guy who came up with the modern legend (the translator) still believes his story.  He is fed up seeing how charlatans have hijacked "his" planet and forced it to participate in the Big 2012 Hoax Off.  His original story had Nibiru return in 2085, not 2003, 2004 and 2012 (all dates given by the charlatans who have decided to sell books about Nibiru -- without the original author's permission, of course).

Newton's analysis of the Bible (for real -- he had been asked by the Church to do that), concluded that the end of the world could not be before 2060.  He did NOT say that it would be in 2060, only that it could not be before.

There are no asteroids the size of Texas heading our way to hit us.  The fact the the bold lie includes a reference to NASA does not make it more true.

The red giant phase of our Sun's life will occur in 5 billion years, not in 2012.

Nothing much.  I think it is the 23rd you are referring to... Still, nothing much.  Anything that does happen is purely coincidental.

Watch the documentaries - "Cracking the Mayan Code" and "What the Ancients Did for Us" - that covers the Mayans (and Aztecs too)... and there are a whole bunch of other documentaries which deal with the Mayans.  What you will learn is that while they were certainly smart and did develop some interesting things - they also were backward in other areas, namely their bloodletting and sacrifices.  There is little to indicate that they could forsee the end of the life on Earth, etc etc - and so, that date is the end of a cycle, when a new one begins - and that is all?

The Aztecs were hoping to meet one of their Gods, when the Spaniards arrived - and of course they were wrong in doing that.  Which brought about the end of their civilisation.

Anyway - there are a lot of digging up of archaeological sites of Mayan buildings, etc - which haven't begun at all, but with the Mayan code cracked - maybe something will be uncovered in future, about them?

well iv been researching that drastic weather change will occur because of the planet nibiru. planet nibiru orbits our solar system every 3600 years and on december 21, 2012 the planet nibiru will just fly by our planet earth and the earths axis will definitley change. planet nibiru wont hit earth, but it change the earths atitude and also change us. in 2009 or 2010, we will be seeing a bright red star beside the sun, i think every sunset or something. so dont worry and we'll all just die in a few years!! cant wait to experience it. if it did happened, then it would be really cool if i was the only one that survived. Oh yeah, i forgot tell you that 2/3s of the earth will not survive so that would be like a few millions of people left, but then they'll just die from the weather.
