What will happen to my friend who has damaged rent to own property and hasnt paid them anything in 8 months?

They have been harassing him to return the merchandise but he has moved. They recently sent a notice to him that looked fake stating they could get him for rental theft.

Fake looking or not, your friend is liable for damages he caused, plus unpaid rents, plus costs of anything he removed from the premises which did not belong to him.

A rent-to-own is nothing more than a rental agreement, with the option of a purchase at the end of the rental term.  Therefore, your friend falls under the laws which govern residential rentals.

Tell your friend to expect a lawsuit, and tell him to expect to lose that battle.
