Question:

What will happen to the Amazon?

I am constantly reading how greedy ranchers and farmers are destroying parts of the Amazon rain forest for their own profit. This is called "illegal" by the Brazilian government, but if that's the case then why does it continue, seemingly unabated?

Are there any examples of parts being destroyed and then abandoned by choice or force to let the rain forest come back? Is it possible?

  1. There is indeed very alarming deforestation rate in Amazon rainforest. The reason why there is no suitable action to stop this are two main things: not enough funds and lack of sustainable development.Lately rich countries are starting to invest more into forest funding (Norway and Britain) but this won't be enough without some serious plan necessary for sustainable development. Yes it is possible to plant new tress on destroyed and abandoned areas but this takes lot of time and of course funds.

  2. Hi,

It is difficult to stop these people as most of them are being poor for generations and now they have the chance to live a better life - with the expense of their own natural resources (i.e. in this case the Amazon and tributary). So why should they stop doing what they are doing right now???
