  1. They're scheduled to be retired, but I've heard rumors that the last flight may be as late as 2012.

After than, the CEV vehicle should be in use (Crew Exploration Vehicle), called Orion.  The new lunar lander (described as an Apollo Lunar Module on steroids) is currently being designed, called Aries (last I heard).

  2. Well, there's a good chance the Space Shuttles might not even retire exactly in that year. I believe the shuttles will go on display at the National Air and Space Museum after they are expired.

  3. well, unless they get Project Constellation up and running soon they might not be able to retire the Shuttles in 2010.

When the do retire the Shuttles, one will go on display in the National Air and Space museum, another will go to Kennedy Space Center. The third I'm less sure about but I would say it's probably going to Johnson Space Center in Houston Texas or U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama

  4. any they don't scrap will end up in museums.

  5. Hopefully they will be replaced by the new Orion system and all existing shuttles will be retired to museums for display.

  6. I'm only guessing here but i think they will be donated to aerospace museums around the united states, that way school children will be able to go inside and see what it was like when the astronauts flew it, heck it might inspire more young people to take an active interest in the space program.
