  3. Bio-diesel

  4. If US gas hits 9 dollars a gallon it means the national reserve is gone and it means you are spending 90% of you income on your daily necessities like food and heat.   You are not gonna have money left over for the luxury of bitching about the cost of filling up your SUV, because you would have sold it long ago to buy bread.

  5. More carpooling. More telecommuting. More mass transit (though that price will go up, too). Lots more walking. The ones who will be hurting the most are those who have to drive but whose incomes make them least able to afford it - customer service and retail workers. If you've got a nice tech-centered job and an MBA, you can work from home probably three days a week.

If the high prices continue, you'll see trucks and SUVs abandoned or sold for scrap or traded in for whatever they can get and use the proceeds to buy a little Hyundai. GM has just announced they're closing four plants that produce trucks and SUVs - and they may sell Hummer (no surprise).

If these measures aren't enough to mitigate the rise in fuel prices, then you'll see even more drastic measures. People will move closer to where they work (this will require that the financial markets recover and the housing markets recover).

The very last thing that will happen is food prices, after increasing more and more, will finally buckle. Because we need food, but need gas to get it to us, food prices will rise longer than gas prices will. Ultimately, local produce will become more important, as will shelf-stable goods (since they allow fewer grocery trips and indicate economies of scale).

So it's a good time to be in the business services, ag, and SmartCar businesses.

  6. i don't know about the rest of the USA, but i will be walking everywhere!

  7. Long before then you are going to see (already starting) a move back to the cities and such.  The burbs are going to die.  Mucho whining and crying.  You will see me happily driving on almost empty roads with my Harley.
