Yahoo! News is working on new ways for readers to comment on the news and participate in a discussion around it. While we work on our new community features, the message boards that have been linked from individual news articles will be taken offline Dec. 19.

As currently set up, the Yahoo! News message boards allow a small number of vocal users to dominate the discussion. In addition, related discussions from similar news articles are not easily linked. Over the next few months, we plan to offer new discussion forums based on topics in the news and incorporating the latest features to foster a better discussion for all of our readers.

So what will happen?

  1. very litlle should happen

  2. Probably nothing earth-shattering, except to those who have made the boards their lives. Everyone who is/was a regular will probably lay low 'til they figure out how things work, and then they'll figure out how to get back into their regular routines online.

Personally, this move has been looooong overdue from Yahoo. So many boards that showed contained old posts, yet you couldn't add a new post. Or, the rec function was often dysfunctional (like the trolls). And then, of course, there are the trolls.....

  3. I've been reading some of the messages on the boards and people are talking about boycotting Yahoo and switching to another server over closing the boards. If so, will it have any impact?

My hope is that they can take out the nudity. Some of this is revolting.
