  1. No, neither Russia nor the US wants to go to war with each other.  We did some stupid things diplomatically that annoyed Russia, so Russia is retaliating and also widening its local sphere of influence.

Here's the story: Bush and Rumsfeld were looking for more troops for the "Coalition of the Willing" back in 2002 and 2003. So they made Georgia some hints they couldn't follow up on and promises they had no intention of keeping. Georgia's President Saakashvili was a sucker and swallowed the bait, thought he had a mutual defense treaty.

Meanwhile we supported the breakaway republic of Kosovo becoming a nation, against the wishes of Russia and China. Of course we have every right to do this, but there are more and less diplomatic ways to do this, and we did it undiplomatically.

Fast forward to summer 2008 when some provinces of Georgia want to break away. Saakashvili thinks he has U.S. backing and goes in hard with tanks and artillery, and civilians die. Russian leaders Putin and Medvedev say the situation is just like Kosovo and go in with tanks and artillery to defend the breakaway provinces, and more people die.

Georgian President Saakashvili calls on Bush for help. Bush does nothing. What could he do with our military stretched so thin after all the bungling in Iraq? Russia presses its advantage.

  2. The breakaway provinces want to be part of Russia not Georgia.  Georgia attacked the provinces for this and Russia came in and defended them.

If Russia wants to attack Iraq they will do it.

The US doesn't want to get involved even though we disagree with Russia and Georgia is our ally.  We know Georgia is at fault we just wont say it publicly.

  3. former is the key word in that sentence!!!! if U.S. wouldn't get into this none of this panic would happen!!! you are panicking for nothing!

  4. I doubt it.

I think Russia wants to absorb the breakaway Georgian provinces, including South Ossetia.
