  1. nothing as long as it,s summer. you might want to go to the thinner oil in the winter, it will make it easier to turn over.

  2. 1..its not an upgrade...its a differnt weight

2,use oil that it calls for...they pay people big money to figgure it out

3 only reasion to go heavy oil is for bad leaks or burning a lot

  3. Probably nothing,in old engines it was common to do this to quieten down the rattles of wear and tear but in the modern engines, the oils are thinner to allow them to pass through the "channels" easier and sometimes thicker oil cant get through the same and actually cause damage.Best to stick to the right oil and use an additive. Good luck!!

  4. You do not need thicker oil if you live in the United States as it is NOT winter yet and you should ONLY use what is recommended..

If you want to run thicker or synthetic you should have it flushed first

  5. it could provide better protection, keep you from burning as much oil, it could also cost you more fuel because of the work that the oil pump has to do to circulate that oil.

  6. Depending on the make and model of engine you will get less gas mileage/horsepower and if the engine is overhead cam it is possible that the cam bearings will be damaged due to lack of oil volume due to the fact that thicker oil means higher pressure but less volume and some engines have orifices that regulate the flow of oil to the cam bearings and thicker oil can't flow through them fast enough to provide adequate lubrication.

  7. If your truck presently does not leak or use an appreciable amount of oil you'll be actually DOWN GRADING by using higher viscosity oil. Your truck manufacturer knows best when it comes to the viscosity rating of motor oil for the motor. The clearances inside the engine were designed and machined closer together than ever before if it's 10 yrs. old or newer.

Low viscosity oil pumps to critical engine parts faster during cold starts. Believe it or not, 86 % of all engine wear occurs at cold start-up . It also pumps more volume of lubricant through the oil galleries. Because more oil always reaches the frictional surfaces light weight oil cools machined surfaces and water jackets much faster. Low viscosity oil creates less mechanical drag on the oil pump which increases horsepower and fuel economy.

If you find my sermon hard to believe go to: Joe Gibbs Racing Oil to actually see what the Gibbs team uses use in their race cars. Are you ready for this: 0W for qualifying. 0W-20 during restrictor plate races. 5W-20 during non-restrictor plate racing.

  8. nothin much

    what are you swithching from

    10w30

    or 5w30

just keep in mind thicker isnt always better

the reason that oil viscosities have gotten thinner is because bearing clearances have become smaller so using thicker oils will interfere with oil flow and the oil pressure will increase.

In a worn engine it may be alright to increase the viscosity of the oil cuz the bearing clearances have become larger.
