  1. Kids love puppets and props or volunteering to interact (become part of the story).

  2. use different voices to keep their attention. That is what I do when I read to my kids.

  3. Make sure the story is not too long- Shorten it ahead of time if you have to. Use puppets to play some of the characters- or props.

  4. Briefly tell your story and ask the children questions.  Have props for the different characters in your story and then have the children act out your story.  For example, bring a hat for dad, a fancy scarf for mom, an apron for grandma, etc.

  5. Get them involved in the story. Relate the text to their real life situations. Ask them about times when they were generous or ask them what they appreciate. Have a special helper to turn the pages. Ask the kids to describe the pictures and talk about what's going on in the story. Keep asking questions to check for comprehension and keep their attention.

  6. Make yourself acting of the main character in the story with face expressions and even you can have costume for your story~. Example, a mustache and a glasses and act like a Daddy in the story, pick the right time to ask the kids questions related to your motive "is it good to be selfish?" "you want to share?" "We must say..? (Thank you) ... things like that.  It will be fun to listen and watching as well.
