What will make a 1995 Buick LeSabre's speedometer jump and then cut off completely?

Question

While going down the road the speedometer will jump out of control and then the car will jerk and then cut off. I pull to the side of the road and it will crank right up only to do the same thing in a matter of minutes. I get it home and park it and the battery will die just sitting in the yard. I have changed the alternator and replaced the battery numerous times. I can't figure out anything else about it. I even checked the wires and battery terminals. I need serious help getting it fixed b/c i can't move it to a mechanic b/c it won't last long driving it. It will just cut off.

There is a sensor on your transmission that runs to your speedo.it may be bad.
