In my class 80% of the grade is based on tests and I have a 72% and the final exam is worth the other 20%.

If 80% of my grade is a 72% then what is the highest grade I can earn? What is the lowest? How do you calculate?

  1. i believe the highest grade you can get is a 77.6% & the lowest you can get is a 57.6%.

to calculate, multiply the weight of each component by the score, & then add them all up.  if the tests are 80% of the grade, & you have 72% -- .80x.72= 57.6%.  this is your pre-final exam score, so a score of "0" on the final should result in the 57.6% as your total final grade.  if you score a 100% on the final -- .20x1.00= 20%.  add them together & you arrive at your final class grade: 57.6%+20%= 77.6%

  2. If you ace the test with 100%, the best you can do is go from a C- to a C+, but if you bomb with a zero, you can fail the course.  Look at it this way, you need to have a C or better to guarantee the C you've earned.

If 80% of your grade is at a 72%, then your grade percent is at 57.6%, which is failing if you don't add to it, which is what would happen if you bomb the test completely.  Your final, which is 20% of your grade could therefore add as much as 20% onto that total of the final, bringing it up to 77.6% or the C+, which is the maximum grade you could earn.

In other words, if you aced the class this far(100%) and it's 80% of your grade, then the minumum grade you would have gotten from bombing the test would be a B- as the final would respresent 20% of your grade, you would finish with 80%, even though you aced everything else in the class, so this test is a LOT on your grade.

    Good Luck
