The only thing significant will be that people will finally stop asking this question.....and of course they will come up with another date to drive us all crazy with that.

2012 is just the revealing of the 'antichrist' at the middle of what Jews and Christians call the 7 year Tribulation. All things must come and go. If you believe or not, that is up to you.

Things to look for to prove it to yourself soon:

Crash of American banks starting this week.

The fall of America as a power economically and in other ways.

The start of the North American Union.

Push to one world government.

Push to one world religion where there are "manys ways to God".

More food shortages and famines.

More earth quakes.

More fires.

Strange and severe weather.

Push for USA and Israel to attack Iran which will start WW3-the atomic war to end all wars. (If you think China, Russia, and the Muslim world would just sit back, you are sadly mistaken and a fool!)

Temporary and unheard of "peace in the middle east".

Rise of a miraculous and awe inspiring world leader later to turn world dictator.

Major spiritual awakenings.

Rise of Islamic fanaticism.

Toleration of everything but Jews and Christians.

Rise in wickedness and corruption.

Implementation of Project Bluebeam (be ready to hear more and more 'alien talk'... watch your local skies for the show!)

2012 has been the end of this Age prophecy of many religions, cultures, and people all through the world.

The "true" part.

On December 21, 2012, the Sun will be at the southernmost solstice position on the ecliptic.

The Meso-American Long Count calendar will begin a new Long Count. Mayan astronomers did use that calendar (it is simply a day-count calendar, similar to our own "Julian Day" calendar)

The position of the solstice will be at its closest to the Galactic equator (this is on purpose, as the Long Count calendar was built to use this date as a cross-over to the new count) -- using that as a proof that the calendar makes a "surprisingly accurate prediction" is exactly the same as being surprised that our own calendar predicts the New Year for January 1

"Wow, How did they know, way back in Summer 2008 when they printed the new calendars, that 2009 would begin on a January 1st -- they must have been clairvoyant."

The "bland"

The sun will cross the Galactic equator. The Sun crosses the Galactic equator twice every year, around December 21 and June 21 every year. I survived the Galactic Crossing of June 21 2008, so I feel strong enough to survive both of the 2012 crossings.

There may be lots of activity on the Sun.

Solar activity matches the sunspot cycle. There is a maximum every 11 years (or so). So far, I have survived mumblety-mumble of these solar maximums, I think I can survive a few more. But don't take it from me, check around you if there is anyone older than 11.

The "useless"

These things happen (on average) every 700,000 years and we are about due. Even though some of the signs are there, we do not know it if has actually started yet. When it does, the change takes about 1,000 years. Obviously it will not be ready in time for the Big 2012 Hoax Off.

The "blatantly false"

"The Mayan calendar ends and they (the Mayans or their calendar) predicted the end of the world. "

No they didn't. Mayan astronomers used the Long Count calendar. They have described astronomical event which were to take place well after the year we call 2012 (the same way we can write about solar eclipses that will take place in the year 3000). They used the Long Count calendar to indicate the date of these events. Obviously they expected neither the world nor their calendar to end.

"Planet Nibiru will... (whatever)".

Planet Nibiru (in this context) is a fictitious planet that came out of a poor translation of old Sumerian texts and the "vivid imagination" of the original translator. Even this guy, who had thus created the legend of Nibiru, is tired of seeing "his" planet associated with 2012. He had calculated that it could not come back before 2085. (However, it is still a fictitious planet).

"Asteroid and comets will destroy us..."

The Earth is hit every day by asteroids and comets (small ones, of course). Anything big enough to do serious damage or destroy civilization is tracked and we are safe for a few decades (after that we simply don't know as there may be subtle changed in orbits that affect where these things are after a hundred years).

"Buy my book..."

A lot of these "New Agers" have books and videos to sell. Some of them go as far as selling you the "secrets" to survival.

"It will be the end of the world but if you give me your money, you, my friend, will be allowed to survive."

the bible teaches that no one will know the day nor the hour of the coming of the Son of Man (Jesus)...it says we shall know that the time is near by the signs...His coming is even at the doors.  I do not know about 2012...I do know that He is coming soon.  His "soon" is not the same as ours as He is timeless.  The signs are in place, however, and I believe that it could happen at any moment.  The tribulation is coming...ready or not.  God bless.

The London Olympics. Wimbledon tennis championship.  Tour de France.  Melbourne Cup.  State of Origin rugby league series in Australia. "World" Series in the USA.  

Astronomically, a transit of Venus in June 2012, just like the one a few years ago.  

People will stop asking questions about 2012 doomsday on 24 December 2012.  A few of the frauds might get beaten up by those they have defrauded.  Some might even get sued in the courts.  A lot of books and  DVDs will be junked, a lot of clips will disappear from YouTube, a lot of web sites will be taken down and the History Channel will have to find another doomsday "documentary" to foist on a credulous audience.

Or maybe they will find "evidence" that the ancient Egyptians drove Diesel trucks while they built the pyramids, or the Assyrians got to the Moon in 1673BC.   Any old rubbish will do if they can imply there is a conspiracy of silence about it.

Basically, anyone who predicts the end of the world should be introduced to the pillory.  The impact of rotten fruit should drive some of their nonsense out.
