Is it cheaper and more energy efficient to boil the kettle to fill the saucepan? Or run the hot tap until very hot? or to boil the water in the pan? I am assuming kettle = more electricity, hot water =more water and boiling in the pan = more gas! Does it make a difference?

  1. try a pressure cooker it can cook many things at once with out using a lot of water and boils very quickly

  2. Boil the water in the pan with a lid on it, hot water from the tap won't stay hot for very long so your only gonna have to re-boil it on the stove anyway, plus hot water from the tap isn't very safe to use without being boiled first. and boiling the kettle will take more energy then boiling in a saucepan.

  3. Running water through the taps to get hot is a big waste of energy as most of the heated water will either run down the drain or sit cooling in the pipe work, plus you would have to bring it to the boil on the stove,,,just fill your kettle to the MINIMUM amount required and heat that way,or for an even bigger saving put one cup of water in a pan and heat on the stove covering the pan with a lid to keep as much heat in as possible, that way you only ever heat what water you will be using

  4. 1st - Running the hot tap is worst as this water is heated by gas or electric heating so there is no gain, only a loss of water and heat while the tap runs.

2nd - The gas ring and kettle will be about the same cost - I would boil the kettle as it is usually quicker.

Most important thing is to only heat what you will use!  if you use twice as much water by mistake it will cost you twice as much to heat it.

  5. If you want a cup of tea or coffee and have a small amount of washing up to do or need boiling water for cooking, you may as well use a kettle for both jobs in one go. Food that requires boiling or microwaving will cook with greater energy efficiency in the microwave as it does not have to boil water before it begins to cook the food and if you can teach yourself to prepare food in the microwave you will save time, money and energy.

  6. take your thermos flask to your neighbour and ask can they fill it for you.
