I can see only a few alternative options, only one of which is really feasible for most people. We could:

1) Bicycle (but only feasible for short distances)

2) Buy a 150 cc moped that gets 70-95 mpg that you can drive on the highway (most economically feasible)

3) Maybe we should just all go back to riding horses! But that would create a whole slew of problems, such as:

a) Lack of hitching posts and water troughs at your place of work

b) So the poor horse is going to stand there for 8+ hours in one spot while you work?

c) You work 50 miles away (that horse is going to get some exercise!)

d) Lack of a place to keep a horse (especially if you live in an apartment)

e) Gas prices would be offset by the cost of feeding, shoeing and vet bills.

So, what will YOU do when gas prices get so high that you can't use your car anymore, and you live in a place that doesn't have an excellent public transportation system?

  1. The same thing I am doing now.Walk.And only use my car when its totally necessary.Having a horse is not cheaper than driving.Nor will it ever be.The costs of feed is up,vets is up,it must be shoed and have a decent place and pasture to run in.Not an option.Bikes are for the young and I can't see myself at this age riding a motor bike.

  2. Laugh at the dolts in their SUV's.

    Take public transportation.

  3. You could ride a bike like u suggested. It wouldn't pollute the air,it would save u money, but it would take longer. You could also take public transportation which costs nearly the same.U could try getting a petition for people to sign saying the government needs to stop being money scrounges. Really there is nothing we can do unless we get at least 75% of America to goes against the retarded government.  We need to show them that we will stop driving and they will get less money. Then they will lower the prices.

  4. well honestly, i think i would still buy and ride around a lot like i do, not saying its its cool to waste gas or anything but i have to have my freedom

  5. Since the fall of soviet union, Cuba could no longer get cheap oil from the Soviet union.  So they did what they could, and that was to go back to horse and cow carriages.

We keep using 40% of the worlds oil, we aren't far off.

    Good Luck...

  6. Laugh at all the people too poor to buy their own gas, and have to ride the bus, while I cruise by in my Benz.
