I can see only a few alternative options, only one of which is really feasible for most people. We could:
1) Bicycle (but only feasible for short distances)
2) Buy a 150 cc moped that gets 70-95 mpg that you can drive on the highway (most economically feasible)
3) Maybe we should just all go back to riding horses! But that would create a whole slew of problems, such as:
a) Lack of hitching posts and water troughs at your place of work
b) So the poor horse is going to stand there for 8+ hours in one spot while you work?
c) You work 50 miles away (that horse is going to get some exercise!)
d) Lack of a place to keep a horse (especially if you live in an apartment)
e) Gas prices would be offset by the cost of feeding, shoeing and vet bills.
So, what will YOU do when gas prices get so high that you can't use your car anymore, and you live in a place that doesn't have an excellent public transportation system?
