  1. I have just finished my 1st year of medical school.  I am choosing to become a doctor because that is what I am called to do.  I love the human body, and I want to dedicate my life to helping people who are infected with HIV.  For me it came as a sort of epiphany at the age of 18.

My classmates have all sorts of different motivations.  Some had early experiences with doctors.  Some had their life saved. Others watched their parents being saved by medical staff.  There are also a few students who are becoming doctors simply because of money, or it's just what is expected of them since their parents are doctors.

There is no one reason why someone chooses to spend 30k + a year for school for 10+ years, why they choose to work 80-90 hrs per week,  why they often have to put their family on hold,. or why they lose so many friends in the process.

If this career is right for you, you would know it.  Trust me.

  2. Avarice and deception.

  3. "what will you see inside a student who wants to be a doctor?"  muscles, bones, ligaments, capillaries, arteries, veins, internal organs and a brain.

  4. Originally my son was impressed with the money.  He wanted a career that paid really well.  It all changed though once he began that trek.  Now it's a genuine passion for medicine, specifically trauma medicine.  He loves it.  He says he can't explain it.  He said it's a very conflicting feeling though, because to hope for something exciting to come through the door, it's almost like wishing poor fate onto someone.  He doesn't like that feeling but he says he's working through it.  They actually have counselors for stuff like that at school.

  5. a hard worker willing to put long hours to learn and learn . Someone with a strong heart who is not afraid to take decisive actions if the situation raises.

  6. I think it is the same thing you would see in anyone who is passionate about anything.
