Hi

Am due to fly in a few days and the weather report looks a bit windy. At what point or speed would the wind endanger a flight and cause a cancellation?

  1. Wind management is a command decision that will be made by qualified experts at the moment of your takeoff.

Wind conditions that will influence a takeoff or landing are very rare, and you should not worry about them.

Have a seat, watch the funny people, and let the professionals handle it.

  2. Depends upon the wind direction relative to the runway. If the wind direction is reasonably aligned with the runway, then there is really no limit. The aircraft simply gets airborne sooner. Airports able to handle 747 traffic have runways that favor the directions of the prevailing winds.

The crosswind limit for the 747 is 30 knots on a dry runway, 15 knots on a very wet runway.

One of the wind-related problems that can delay, or cancel, a departure is "wind shear". This means that the wind is changing its speed, direction, or both, very rapidlly.  While this could delay departure, wind shears are often faily brief.

Edit: Oops, I forgot about tailwind. Thanks, John.

  3. 10 Kt tailwind. You did say force right? No there are no crosswind limitations. The maximum crosswind demonstrated during certification flight testing is in the performance section but is not a limitation. The only windspeed limit for a part 25 aircraft, transport, is a ten knot tailwind limit.

  4. just sit and enjoy the flight
