    EDIT - @ Vince - No, aerobic respiration is the process that plant and animal cells use to convert simple sugars into energy in the presence of oxygen. It can be summarised simply by the following equation:

    Glucose + O2  ---> CO2 + H2O + Energy

    As you can see, oxygen (O2) is required.

    The question was the conversion of glucose under anaerobic conditions (i.e. without oxygen) which is fermentation.
