- Paradox/paradoxical

In this context, this is something that is seemingly absurd or contradictory that somehow makes sense or contains truth. The guy might paradoxically leave the girl, for reasons that only he understands.

- Contradiction/contradictory OR contrary

In this context, this is something that defies itself. So the guy says he loves her, but is self-contradictory because he proceeds to leave her.

It's not quite irony - that would be more the case if the girl was known to leave every single guy she was with, and the guy was known never to break up a relationship, and then the first time the girl decided NOT to walk away, the guy does.
