I am 26 and going back to school for Occupational Therapy. It's a complete career change for me and need to be smart about money. Should I invest in some schooling to become an OT assistant ( to gain expereince? Or continue with my current job try to get into a Master's program?

  1. Becoming an OT assistant would be the best idea. When you have your degree, and are ready for a job, they will want to see relevant experience. Where are you located? Here in MD there are a few good places I can recommend.

  2. NO no Pamela, DO not become a COTA!!! save your money and your time and go straight to OT school!!! In the long run, the pay off will be higher.  The truth is that I have NEVER worked with a COTA who does not regret their decision to go to COTA school versus OT school. Nor have I ever worked with an OTR who started off as a COTA.  You do not need the experience ahead of time (you will need some volunteer hours to get into OT school).

Good luck, go for the real thing!!
