  1. to much oil

    not enough oil

    burning oil

what color is the smoke, different colors indicate different issues

could be burning gas to fast at the wrong ratio

  2. check the spark plug and filter, if the plug's fouled or the filter's clogged it can interfere with the gas/air/oil combination in the cylinder. and sometimes if the muffler has a hole in it the lack of back-pressure can cause the motor to smoke.

  3. If this is a four stroke engine, then it's either too much gas getting to the cylinder, or you're burning oil because your rings are worn.

If this is a two stroke engine, then your fuel-oil ratio is wrong.(too much oil)

  4. too much oil in the engine or oil mix in the gasoline

  5. Make sure oil level is correct and not too full, if so drain some off. Make sure you don't add oil to the petrol (assuming its a four stroke unit). I find my mower (B+S engine) will always smoke for a minute or so after starting but this is because I always turn it on its side to clean it after use and this causes oil to run to other parts of the engine hence the oil gets burnt off next time I start it!
