  1. Well, I only know the reverse from what I was told in the UK when I lived there for 6.5 years. My Associate of Arts degree was the equivalent to British A-Levels, grades A-C (if passed all courses -- English, Math, Science, etc., which I did).

A U.S. Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree is the equivalent to the first two years of a four-year degree. If you have your AA, you can transfer to any state university as a junior (third year of university) and you do not have to retake any courses. I know the Florida University System takes part in this.

According to UK NARIC, my US High School Diploma was equivalent to GCSEs, if passed all relevant courses, A-C. Of course, in high school you are currently required to take the following courses (at least in Florida, that is):

    English - 4 y credits

Math - 3 credits (must include Algebra I or equivalent)

    Science - 4 credits

Social Studies - 3 credits (World History, American History, Economics, & American Gov.)

Practical or Performing Art - 1 credit OR combination ½ credit of each)

PE - 1 credit (must include ½ credit of Personal fitness).

Life Management Skills - ½ credit

    Electives - 8½ credits

    -----------------------------

    Total     24   credits

    1 full school year = 1 semester

    1 semester = 1 credit

    ½ credit = ½ semester
