So seeming I am bored, I am looking at the past of Hartford Whalers goalies, and I came across an old, forgotten goalie who I really liked: Arturs Irbe. So when I saw a picture of him, it inspired me to ask the question:

What do you think Arturs Irbe's pads would look like if he were still playing in the NHL today?

If anyone remembers, he wore the same pads and helmet his whole career (1991-2004) and his pads got stained, marked, torn - the works.

Here are some pics to show you what I mean for people who don't know:

  1. Irbe used Koho Revolution pads and glove for most of his NHL career...the same set.  He was so anal about his gear that he wouldn't even let the equipment managers touch it - all repairs were done by him.  He finally agreed to let Eagle copy the pads and they made him a new set.  If you find one of the pictures from his last year or two in the NHL, you will see the logos are very subtle (white on white), but the gear says Eagle.

  2. A mix between Betty Davis' eyes and Chris Chelios' @ss

    cheeks.

  3. Archie is far from forgotten (try saying that twice) by this dude who was a hs senior in California the year the Sharks nearly made the Cup finals in their 3rd year thanks in part to Irbe's play. And keep in mind they had only won 11 games the previous year!

  4. I read somewhere they've been hermetically sealed in plastic bags as a biohazard.

  5. Actually, they're not the same pads. I know this because he's also known for breaking in his new pads by driving the team bus over them several times. Notic in the second and third photos you posted, at least his glove and bloker are different brands from photo to photo- Jofa or Koho. Same model, companies merging, but obviously a different piece of gear.

Edit: look at the blockers. One has a blacked out (made to look like puck marks) Jofa logo. One is clearly Koho. Helmet looks the same though. Second and third photos.

Jofa and Koho are now part of the same brand (RBK) so it's probably something like them merging and him getting a pad with the new name, but of the same model.
