  1. "My voter support base comes from immigrants and I support these workers wholeheartedly."  Because his populist power base was among the lower-class immigrants streaming into New York City at a time when social programs did not exist.

"Recessions are caused by wealthy capitalists seeking to control working people."  Tammany Hall worked against the dominance of the No-Nothings and Republican Party who were anti-immigrant and feared union organizers.

"The civil rights of the working class must be asserted against the domination of the wealthy capitalists."  Boss Tweed overcharged the corporate tax treasury to provide jobs and what today would be termed welfare benefits to people in need.  What he and his cronies did was illegal, but this must be seen against the framework of a system rigged against the workers.....no disability payments, no unemployment benefits, and no welfare payments.

"The wealthy oppressors encourage informants among the poor in the working class because they fear people will demand their rights to a decent wage and home."  In an action not unlike a guerrilla war or an underground movement, the corporate officers needed informants within the ranks of the poor to mount their campaign against Tammany Hall and Boss Tweed.
