Hi! I'm 15 years old and my dream is to go to australia or NZ to live and I would also be interested in going to univeristy out there. What processes would I need to go through in order to do this? I live in the UK.

  1. The Australian immigration system is complicated and unfair. Applicants are awarded 'points' for proving that they have certain attributes such as university qualifications, extensive work experience in one field, or just alot of money.

Depending on how many people the government wants to enter the country, each year the minimum number of points required goes up or down.

The unfair part is that this points system only applies to immigrants from the UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, France or Germany. Croatians, Lebanese, Chinese etc can just bypass the system and take a language test. It's reverse-racist bullcrap in my opinion.

Since you're still young it will be much easier for you to immigrate here than it would be for an adult citizen of the UK. Rather than build up a career to get enough points, you can apply for a university (we have almost too many universities for a population of only 20 million, so with at least minimal effort you'll get in somewhere) and live here on a study visa while studying (un-skilled casual/part time jobs are avaliable everywhere and renting isn't incredibly expensive anyway).

Once you graduate with a Bachelor's degree from an Australian university, you won't have to worry about passing any system or taking a test. Just apply for citizenship and it'll probably go through.

I don't know for sure, but I think New Zealand has the same process for immigration and citizenship. They're the same as us in almost every other way, so it seems likely. At any rate you would be able to get into a university there easily as well. They have a very, very small population.

Another note; because Australia is part of the Commonwealth, both you and any children you have will be able to apply for and receive UK citizenship at any time. Unless Australia becomes a republic.

Cheers and good luck with your education!

  2. For all of the answers to all of your questions regarding entry to Australia, visas etc, including student visas, go to the following very informative government site:

  3. i don't know where the dude above got his information saying that New Zealand and Australia residents can get UK citizenship from, because that's utter c**p! Imagine!

the only way either NZ or Australian citizens can get UK citizenship is if their grandparents or parents are UK citizens, otherwise the only thing we can get is a working holiday visa which was recently cut down from 2 years to one year.

for information on immigrating to NZ check out http://immigration.govt.nz it should answer all your questions. the rules are pretty much the same for both countries
